Clayton Donaldson has today joined League One side Brentford after two months of pure speculation regarding his future.
From Coventry to Oxford to Bradford, there didn't seem to be a club in the Football League who weren't 'close to signing' the League Two top scorer in recent weeks. It is then rather predictable that he today signs for a club who were never linked with him.
Donaldson departs Gresty Road after three years after signing in the summer of 2008 for a six figure fee from Hibs. Occasionally playing out on the wing, he eventually found his place up front for the Alex, finishing the season as League Two top scorer last season with 29 goals and forging a superb partnership with Shaun Miller, who also netted 19 with 11 assists.
It's a shame that his first two years seemed to be hampered by injury, including a broken leg in 2009 but he still managed over 100 appearances and was one of only a couple of 'Steve Holland signings' to prove his worth.
The 27 year old was offered a new deal at Gresty Road in May but Dario had always remained pessimistic over keeping 'ClayDo' considering his scoring record.
The silver lining of Donaldson penning his deal today means the Alex can finally move in the transfer market. Having remained cautious, in unlikely event Donaldson made a u-turn and with Byron Moore's future at Gresty Road in the balance, there finally seems to be room to breath and build for the new season.
So, good luck to Donaldson and thanks for a fantastic 2010-2011 especially.
