England U-17s Through To Quarter Finals

England U-17s are through to the U-17s World Cup Quarter Finals after some good old penalty shoot out drama against Argentina in Mexico.

However, it wasn't all happy news for the Alex's Max Clayton; the 16 year old spurned his penalty quite a way over the bar, leaving England's future in the competition in the balance. Thankfully Clayton was bailed out in the shoot out as England keeper Jordan Pickford pulled off two great saves to see England progress.

It was a much needed confidence booster for Pickford who, after his well publicised blooper against Canada in the group games, was at fault again as Argentina took a first half lead when Pickford spilt a free kick straight into the path of a Argentine attacker for a simple tap in.

The scores were levelled five minutes before the half time break through a Raheem Stirling effort. The Liverpool youngster's tame shot from some 30 yards out managed to bobble past and evade a few players, including the Argentina keeper, to sneak in at the far post.

It remained 1-1 for the entire second half with the best chance undoubtedly falling to Max Clayton seconds from the full time whistle, Everton's Hallam Hope pulled the ball back across the box but Clayton just couldn't get his footwork right and the glorious chance was saved by the keeper.

The game went straight to penalties, with England winning 4-2. Nick Powell, meanwhile, played over an hour of the game before being withdrawn on the 65th minute. Ben Garratt was an unused substitute.

England now go on to play old foes Germany in the quarter final of the competition after they impressively swept aside USA 4-0 tonight. For the extra confidence, the Germans also won their group with three wins, 11 goals and only one conceded.

The quarter final is scheduled for Monday 4th July at 9PM British time, it will most likely be on Eurosport.
