League newcomers Crawley Town have confirmed they are interested in signing the out of contract Clayton Donaldson this summer.
The Red Devils arrive in the league and, having spent vast amounts in the non-league, look all set to splash the cash again in order to challenge for back-to-back promotions.
Donaldson is being eyed as their 'marquee signing' according to local press and he'd certainly be that for a new league side, having finished the season as the top scorer in the English Football League.
Crawley boss Steve Evans confirmed to thisissussex.co.uk that Donaldson is a target for his club:
'He is a player we like.'
'We have been tracking him but to be fair there will be a lot of clubs who want him as he is a top striker who has proved himself this season.'
Donaldson meanwhile is still considering a new offer from the Alex having remained open minded following the final game of the season last weekend.
Many are still expecting the 27 year old to have played his final game for the Railwaymen, despite Dario calling the offer an 'attractive' one, and for many ClayDo will move with our best wishes.
Whether those wishes would be slightly withdrawn should he sign for a fellow League Two side remains to be seen.
With fans under the impression Clayton is looking for a move up the leagues close to his Yorkshire roots, with Huddersfield Town thought to be very keen, a move down South to a fellow League Two side would be slightly disappointing to see.
If he was to remain in the league, you'd really hope it was with us; where one signature (on a contract) would instantly put him up there in the legend stakes and where he'd go half way to creating a promotion challenging side.
But money talks. If Crawley can nearly double his current wage and offer him a signing on fee that we can't, you know where that leaves us in the world of football.
