Academy Side Slip To Defeat At Liverpool

The Crewe Alex Under 18 side slipped to a 4-2 defeat at Liverpool on Saturday.

Nick Powell returned to the academy side having spent the start of the season on first team duty. With Dario holding off the 16 year old's first team full start, Powell was given the chance to get some much needed match practice instead of travelling to Chesterfield.

In an action packed game at the Kirky Academy, the Alex fell behind in the first half when slick passing opened up the Alex for Conor Cody to slide past Ben Garratt in the Crewe goal.

The Alex youngsters improved in the second half and got their rewards through a double from Harry Clayton. The forward showed great technique to volley home an equaliser on the turn from 10 yards out after a lay off from Antoni Sarcevic. Clayton added his second not long after, blasting home after a poor Liverpool clearance from a Alex free kick.

Liverpool though had caused the Alex problems all morning and the impressive Michael Ngoo soon levelled things. A poor kick from Garratt was hit straight back towards his goal, into the path of the lanky Ngoo who managed to tap it past the stranded Garratt.

The Alex's Michael Koral went close to putting the Railwaymen back into the lead but his 20 yard shot drifted inches past the post of Stephens, whilst Casper Hughes saw his 20 yard volley inches away from nestling nestling into the top right hand corner.

Liverpool took the lead again through Matty Regan's near post header from a corner, which deceived a crowded penalty area to find it's way into the back of the net.

Liverpool's victory was sealed with Michael Ngoo's second of the game. Quick foot work inside the area caught out the Alex defence and allowed the England U-19 international to bury Liverpool's fourth of the game.

FT: Liverpool 4-2 Crewe
