'If It's Football, It's Vital'

'Crewe Alex Ultras' Launch

A new supporters group has been set up to improve the match day atmosphere at Gresty Road.

The Crewe Alex Ultras are hoping to turn the barren Gresty Road End into a cauldron of noise and colour. With attendances dropping over the years, the Gresty Road End has died a painful death along the way, leaving the atmosphere at Gresty Road almost non-exsistent.

Supporter Tim Robinson now hopes the Ultras and inject a bit of liveliness back into the stands - starting with this Saturday's match against Oxford United.

Tim told the Crewe Chronicle: "We`ve been horrified by the appalling attendances and support, especially in the Gresty Road End.

"Our main aim is to help the team. We believe the best thing we can do is get behind them at all times and create an atmosphere that is noisy, colourful and intimidating.'

The Ultras will be selling 5,000 red and white balloons before Saturday's match against Oxford with money raised going to towards the likes of flags, banners and drums.

And, despite what the name may be associated with in Europe, the Crewe Alex Ultras does not condone hooliganism, violence or racism. The group's sole aim is to improve the atmosphere, with similar groups at Accrington Stanley and Aberdeen (pictured) having success over the years.

Frankly, it's a superb idea and one all Alex fans should be backing.
