Varney Joins Premier League Underdogs

Luke Varney is a Premier League player today after signing for Blackpool on loan from Derby County.

Ok, we use the term Premier League player in the loosest possible term when it comes to loan deals.... and Blackpool.

It is however a fantastic move for Luke, still only 27. He probably never imagined he'd be where he is now when Neil Baker saw him playing for uber non-league side Quorn as a 20 year old. Even more so when you consider it took some three years for him to find his feet at Gresty Road before hitting it off with Nicky Maynard in 06/07.

His time since his £2.5million departure for Charlton in 2007 hasn't been the most settled, going from London to Derby only to be discarded before he'd got out of the taxi. A loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday last season was probably his most successful stint post-Crewe.

There was talk in the last month or so that Varney would be returning to Gresty Road on loan. Obviously that was never going to happen seeing as he even snubbed QPR to go to the Premier League, but the fun is in the speculation.

He joins friend of CAFC and Blackpool manager Ian Holloway at Bloomfield as well as, of course, David 'Welsh Wizard' Vaughan. The reasons to be backing Blackpool this season are starting to outweigh the reasons not to, if one turn coat is enough of a reason not to.

Good luck to Luke. Still welcome back here if it doesn't work out....
