Crewe captain Kenny Lunt has agreed to join Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer. The creative midfielder shunned what has been described as a 'very good contract' from Crewe, believed to be a five-year deal which would have seen him become the club's top earner, as well as earning himself a testimonial. The news comes as yet another blow to Dario Gradi, who had indicated his desire to build the side around the 26-year old.
Instead, Lunt has opted to join the Owls on a three-year deal, following Madjid Bougherra to Hillsborough. Owls boss Paul Sturrock said, 'I am very pleased to have signed Kenny. He brings a different style of midfield play to the squad. I have watched him over the years and he has a great goalscoring average. I am looking forward to working with him.'
Lunt came through Crewe's academy and spent time playing alongside the likes of Michael Owen as a youngster, as he progressed through the FA National School at Lilleshall. After making his debut as a 17-year old at Swindon, Lunt made 418 appearances for Crewe, scoring 37 goals in the process. However, Lunt will be remembered for the vast number of assists he provided over the years, finishing in the top 10 assistsmen in the division this year, despite playing in a relegated side.
Vital Crewe wishes Kenny Lunt all the best for the rest of his career.
