Contract News Update

Young defender Kelvin Mellor has signed a new one year deal with the club whilst Adam Legzdins mulls over his contract offer.

19 year old Mellor survived last week`s cull to win a new contract after Dario decided the versatile defender could yet progress as a dominant centre half. Having signed from Nantwich a year ago, Mellor was named as a substitute on a couple of occasions in December before spending time out on loan at Newcastle Town last season.

Meanwhile, the club await decisions from Adam Legzdins and Ajay Leitch-Smith over their contract offers. Whilst young striker Leitch-Smith is likely to pen an extension, keeper Legzdins could yet decide to depart.

Despite impressing in his few first team appearances last season, the former Birmingham shot stopper has consistently been overlooked for the number one shirt.

With the club also offering terms to former-loanee Steve Phillips, who was released by Bristol Rovers this month, it looks like 2010-11 could be another season playing second fiddle for Legzdins.

However, with Phillips set to miss the start of the season whilst recovering from a recent shoulder operation the temptation to start the season as number one keeper, and a chance to mount a challenge to keep Phillips out of the team, could be enough for Lego.

Whatever Legzdins` decision, Dario says he`s been given a month to decide and until the deadline has passed there is little point in worrying about a replacement. Dario told CreweAlex.net:

'I am not surprised that Adam and some of the others haven't signed yet. They have a month to decide and have probably gone on holiday, so I am no panicking.

'That is normal and I will only assess the situation if they come back and say they don't want to sign.
