Single Goal Wins It For Spireites

Single Goal Wins It For Spireites

Crewe failed to make it three wins on the trot on Wednesday evening as Chesterfield eased to a 1-0 victory.

A Drew Talbot goal after 27 minutes was enough to win the game. Poor defending and a huge deflection saw Chesterfield take the lead after which they sat back and defending with relative ease.

The Alex were far from their best as they struggled to break down a sound Chesterfield side, who are now just 1 point off the automatic promotion places. Byron Moore offered up just one of two goal scoring chances all game for Crewe, his curling shot from the edge of the area coming out off the underside of the cross bar after just 10 minutes.

It took a further 80 minutes before we got sight of goal again, Westwood running clear on the 92nd minutes only to fire straight at the keeper. It would probably have been harsh on Chesterfield if we had nicked a point at that time anyway.

The lack of chances was something Dario picked up on post-match telling crewealex.net:

i>

Byron was unlucky with his shot in the first half and I think that was probably the only shot we had. We didn't create anything. They were happy with the lead they had but we were poor in the second half. We just couldn't create anything.

'Their goal did take a deflection to be fair, but at the end of the day, if we are in our box more than theirs they deserve the goal.'

The defeat leaves Crewe 15th in the league with play-offs hopes now officially needing a miracle as we sit 8 points off 7th place. However, with four 'easy' games against the likes of Lincoln, Grimsby, Barnet and Torquay approaching then a top half, or even top 10 finish may not be out of the question.
