Comfortable Victory At Newcastle Town

Billy Jones was named captain as the Alex swept aside Newcastle Town in today's pre-season friendly. Newcastle Town 0-7 Crewe Alexandra.

As promised by Gudjon earlier this week, he announced his new captain the the 2009-2010 season and it's Billy Jones who has got the nod.

The former Exeter man will be a slightly controversial choice considering some fans question if he should be in the side to begin with, but considering Gudjon's options you'd be hard pushed to find a better candidate at the moment.

Meanwhile, the match itself couldn't have been a better opener to the summer schedule for Gudjon. A seven-nil thrashing of Newcastle Town will do no harm, even if it was just Newcastle Town.

With doubles from Calvin Zola and Anthony Elding, one of Elding's being a penalty, they were joined on the scoresheet with two from trialist Hamdi Rasak. The score was topped up with a single from Clayton Donaldson.

Both Patrick Ada and Mat Mitchel-King made their first appearance in Alex shirts since their summer move from Histon.

More reaction from the game as and when we get it.

The team went as follows.

Crewe Alexandra: Legzdins, Brayford, Jones, Ada, O'Donnell, Bailey, Mitchel-King, Miller, Donaldson, Elding, Zola.

Second half: Collis, Westwood, Tootle, O'Donnell, Mellor, Ada, Murphy, Pook, Rasak, Grant, Moore.
