New Alex Manager: Thordarson Or Ward

Former Stoke manager Gudjon Thordarson and ex-Carlisle boss John Ward are thought to be the final two names on the shortlist.

It's expected the Crewe board, having interviewed both for the job, will now choose one to take the manager's job at Gresty Road with an announcement expected within days.

Thordarson was manager of Stoke between 1999 and 2002, the Icelandic won half of his 154 games as manager. He took the Potters in to the Championship in 2002 before getting sacked prior to the new season.

He went on to have tough spells at Barnsley and Notts County before moving back to Iceland.

Earlier last month Thordarson confirmed his interest to the BBC saying; 'Crewe is a good club that survives by making footballers. That is a good way to run a club and one reason why the job interests me.'

John Ward began his managerial career at York City where he remained for nearly two years. He went on to manager Bristol Rovers and Bristol City during the mid-90's before becoming Colin Lee's assistant at Wolves.

Ward left Wolves in 2003 to become manager of League Two Cheltenham, he won promotion with the Robins to League One in 2006 and helped them consolidate in League One.

In October last year he was head hunted by Carlisle United and appointed manager on October 2nd. Ward enjoyed a successful season remaining in the top 3 for most of the season but failed to gain promotion at the last hurdle after losing to Leeds United in the play-off semi-final.

After a poor start to this season that saw Carlisle go on a 10 game winless streak Ward and the club parted company.
