Cobblers Midfield Man Rejects Crewe

Former Northampton Town midfielder Joe Burnell claims he turned down a offer from the Alex. The 27 year old midfielder, who played 28 games for Northampton last season, joined Oxford United today.

Burnell also claims to have turned down three other league clubs, including Port Vale, to sign a two year deal with Blue Square Premier side Oxford United.

Speaking to oxfordmail.net, Burnell said: 'Exeter, Aldershot, Port Vale and Crewe had all put contract offers on the table to me, but I was impressed by Oxford's manager and chairman when I met them.'

Meanwhile, assistant manager Neil Baker has blasted claims that the Alex were snubbed by Cheltenham defender Gavin Caines. Local papers in Cheltenham claimed Caines had turned the Alex down in favour of a new deal at Cheltenham, but Baker says it's nonsense.

Baker told crewealex.net: 'I don't really know where these quotes have come from because they are simply not true. We have never spoken to Gavin Caines and we did certainly not make him offer.'

May be it comes down to money? May be it comes down to the fact he lives near the area?
