'If It's Football, It's Vital'

The Suspects Mk 2

A new goalkeeper is in the frame this week, and it's been revealed to be a experienced [former] Championship keeper. Vital Crewe once again look at the possibilities...

Steve Mildenhall

Current Team Yeovil Town

Age30

Position Goalkeeper

Swindon born and bred, Mildenhall has seemingly been around forever in the lower leagues. He made his professional debut as 18 year old for Swindon back in the 96-97 season and went on to make a further 35 appearances at his home town club in the Championship & League One. In 2001 he commanded £150,000 as he moved up to Notts County where he made a further 75 appearances in three years. He left Notts in 2004 and went on to play for Oldham and Grimsby before following his Grimsby gaffer, Russell Slade, to Yeovil Town in League One. He's spent two good years at Yeovil, being named South-West Footballer Of The Year in 2007, but this summer, with his contract up, has seen him reject an offer to stay at Huish Park.

Russell Hoult

Current Team Unattatched Town

Age35

Position Goalkeeper

They don't come much more experienced than Russell Hoult. At 35 he's played well over 300 games in the top two leagues for the likes of West Brom, Derby County and Leicester City. He spent last season with Stoke City but left the club following a three month loan spell with Notts County at the end of the season. He's now in talks with Notts County over a permanent move but could he also be in talks with the Alex?

Michael Oakes

Current Team Unattatched

Age34

Position Goalkeeper

Former Wolves number one Oakes is a wanted man after being released by Cardiff City this month. After notching up over 280 appearances in mostly the top two leagues for the likes of Aston Villa, Wolves and Cardiff, Oakes is understandably hot property. Southend United have already been linked with the 34 year old but a move to the Alex could be favoured if he wishes to move back to his home town of Northwich.

Steve Collis

Current Team Unattatched

Age27

Position Goalkeeper

The youngest of the 'possibles', Collis was released by Southend this month. He's also not quite the experienced 'keeper Baker talks about. With only 60 odd appearances over his time at Barnet, Forest, Yeovil and Southend, Collis has only played one game at Championship level. He's said to have impressed Southend fans with his performances last season but he's unlikely to be the keeper at the top of Holland's list.

All worthy candidates. Think Collis and Mildenhall are more likely than the other two. I heard a strong rumour that Oakes was retiring after the Cup Final (a bit young for a keeper I know) and Hoult is not your classic Alex type signing with his, shall we just say, chequered past!

Hoult and Michael O'Connor could be room mates on away trips. ;-)
