Holland Wanted Spencer Deal
As Cheltenham are the visitors to Gresty Road this Saturday, Steve Holland has talked about the deal that nearly brought Robins striker Damien Spencer to Crewe. The surprised £150,000 deal was struck in January but a medical that revealed a long term worry with a knee brought the deal to an abrupt end.
Spencer was set to play the 'target man' role, one Holland was desperate to fill in a frustrating January period but in the end failed to do. It left the first team coach frustrated having to take rejection after rejection.
Holland reflected on the deal: 'Although he is not prolific in terms of goals, we thought he would have provided that physical presence up there,' Holland told Crewe's official website.
'It was a shame things didn't work out because he is a good player.'
As it turns out though, Spencer will miss Saturday's match having recently gone under the knife on the very same knee injury that denied him the move.
