When George Abbey joined Crewe last summer he put his international career with Nigeria on hold. However it now looks like Abbey wants a return to the Super Eagles after starting the last ten games for the Alex.
The former Vale defender has done ok as he's spent the season covering in both the right back and centre back positions. More recently he's kept Danny Woodards out of the team, or at least out of his favoured position, as Abbey is keeping hold on the right back spot.
When Abbey signed in the summer he gave Crewe his full attention after a talk with Dario Gradi, who is known to be reluctant to sign African, American and Australian internationals due to their inconvenient international duty. Had Abbey continued playing for Nigeria this season Crewe could have lost him for up to a month during the African Nations Cup.
With the Nations Cup out of the way, Abbey is now looking for a return to his national side ahead of their World Cup 2010 qualifiers.
Abbey told brilafm.net: 'I can still play for the national team. I am always available, but it depends of the coach and what he wants.'
Abbey also spoke a bit about where he sits currently with the Alex, hoping that the Railwaymen can avoid relegation.
''I agree that playing in League One may not be a very fashionable reflection for me, but that`s what I have for now and I am trying to make the best of it.
''Although the team is still struggling in the league, I am trying my best and have played all the last ten matches of my club.
''I have been able to put recent injury problems behind me, and I am fully back. My big hope is that we can win again this weekend, and we will take another step away from relegation.'
